Marketing/Communications Specialist

Description:Responsible for developing (planning, developing concepts, writing and editing) marketing content, including collateral, Web sites, publications and other communications. This position serves as a marketing and creative specialist for Builders Club (middle school), Kiwanis Kids (elementary school), Aktion Club (adults with disabilities), the Kiwanis International Foundation, and some additional responsibilities.
Duties:Content Management Team:
  • Develop and create content, including brainstorming, developing creative briefs, creating and presenting concepts, writing and editing.

  • Support the goals, strategies and plans of the marketing team, which reflect the vision, mission and strategic objectives of Kiwanis International, the Kiwanis International Foundation and Kiwanis youth programs.

  • Work directly with the content manager to manage projects and address, identify and resolve department issues.

  • Assist the Global Marketing & Branding team as requested.

  • Attend and actively participate in departmental meetings and daily huddles.

  • Work closely with members of the marketing team, including content management, PR and art/design.

  • Liaise with stakeholders outside of the marketing team to support their goals.
Position Responsibilities:

Publications (25%)

Builders Bloc magazine
Plan, develop, administrate and edit content for two 16-page print publications each year, plus Web versions.

K-Kids Zone magazine
Plan, develop, administrate and edit content for two 16-page publications each year, plus Web versions.

Kiwanis magazine
Write features, edit and proof copy and layout pages for this 40- to 48-page publication every other month.

Marketing collateral (50%)
Develop, write, edit and proof advertisements, brochures, newsletters, catalogs, programs, forms, PowerPoints and other materials for internal partners. Use Marketing Central software to manage projects, including developing production schedules, tracking time, editing and soliciting approvals from internal partners.

Web content development (25%)
In addition to editing Web-based collateral, develop and write original Web content for Kiwanis Web sites and manage content in content management systems.

For Kiwanis Kids, Builders Club, Aktion Club, and the Kiwanis International Foundation, help plan Web site content updates as needed, working closely with partners in these groups. Help develop and drive Web communications strategies.
Qualifications:Educational Requirements:
  • Minimum of bachelor’s degree in journalism, advertising, marketing or communications field or equivalent degree.
Experiential Requirements:
  • At least three years of experience in writing and editing for Web sites, publications and/or print collateral

  • Excellent project management and multitasking skills

  • Strong communication and support abilities

  • Experience “planning the work and working the plan”

  • Experience effectively working with teams

  • A commitment to maintaining positive working relationships
Skills Requirements:
  • Microsoft Office Suite Products
  • Microsoft Outlook—utilization of calendar and management tools

  • Internet proficiency—including experience using social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Google Groups

  • 35 mm camera proficiency

  • Web content management systems (can be learned on the job)

  • SharePoint (can be learned on the job)

  • Marketing Central (can be learned on the job)
Other Requirements:
  • Some weekend work required

  • Some travel required

  • Kiwanis-family, nonprofit or service experience a plus

  • Agency experience a plus

  • Magazine/journalism experience a plus

  • Multilingual a plus
